Self-Care - The Difference between Looking Beautiful and Feeling Beautiful

Everyone wants to be beautiful. That’s why there’s so much advice out there on how to look your best, such as skin care tips, anti-wrinkle creams or other cosmetics. And there’s nothing wrong with this. We want you to look beautiful too!

But it’s even more important to help yourself feel beautiful.

We spend so much time chasing beauty that we forget to also take care of our mental and emotional wellbeing too. But your wellbeing is a vital part of your beauty. Every time you take care of your wellbeing, you are teaching yourself that you are worth taking care of. Remember: the best way to feel beautiful is to take care of yourself. So here are a few ways to help you feel beautiful. We want to help you stop doubting your own beauty, and help you feel more confident in yourself.

  1. Silence Your Beauty-Critic

Everyone has an inner critic. We can be so judgemental of ourselves. We hold ourselves to a brutal standard that we’d never expect from someone else. We say mean things about ourselves, things that would shock our friends if they heard us say it.

We need to learn to silence that inner critic. Here’s a little test. Go look in the mirror. Now, what did you look at first? Did you notice your perfections? Or your imperfections?

You might have started looking at the same annoying things you always focus on. But you know what? We know you’re gorgeous!

Look in the mirror again, and say something nice about yourself. If you like your eyes, say out loud, “I like my eyes.” If you’re proud of the length of your hair, then say so! Now do it every day. It won’t change how you look, but it will change how you feel about how you look. This is a great way to silence your inner critic and break the bad mental habits that so easily form.

  1. The Power of One Compliment

A compliment won’t change your appearance. But it helps you feel more confident in your appearance. And speaking of compliments, we want you to know something. It’s ok to ask for them.

Imagine going to work after putting a lot of effort into your appearance that morning. Maybe you’re wearing a new dress, or trying a different hairstyle. Then you go the whole day without hearing a single compliment. It can be disappointing. But it’s possible everyone was thinking nice things about you, and just never said so.

So it’s ok to ask your spouse or your close friends for support. Just say, “Please tell me if you think I look nice.” It might be embarrassing to ask for! But we’re sure they’d be happy to help you out. In fact, many of them would appreciate hearing compliments from you. Take the time to say some nice things to the people around you. One compliment goes a long way to making someone feel beautiful.

  1. Ignore Social Pressure

Ok, this one is easier said than done. Our society puts a lot of pressure on us all – but women in particular – to ‘look’ a certain way. You might have noticed how most famous actresses have a very similar look. That’s because Hollywood has a type. They represent women with these ‘goddesses’ with long hair, incredible fitness, and stunning natural beauty. This sets an impossible standard. Most of us don’t look like that at all.

It’s not just actresses either. Women in ads, TV news, and models, all seem to be another species. It’s easy to feel like you don’t measure up. Just remember something: there are many different types of beauty.

We come in all shapes and sizes, and we should celebrate that. You may not look like someone on TV, and you may think that means you’re not beautiful. But that’s not true. You are beautiful. Stop comparing yourself to unrealistic standards. The only person you should compare yourself to is you.

  1. Dress Well

The way you dress will affect your mindset. During the recent months of quarantine, many of us working from home found the way we dressed affected our productivity. We were much more efficient while wearing regular office clothes, instead of wearing pyjamas.

Clothes are part of how you present yourself to others, but also, how you present yourself to yourself. When you dress well, you are showing yourself your value.

Next time you go out, take a few extra minutes to go the extra mile. Apply that special make-up you’re saving, or wear that ambitious new blouse. Get your hair just right. Yes, this will make you look beautiful. But more than that. It’ll help you feel beautiful too.

  1. Treat Yourself

There’s no shame in taking care of yourself. You might feel a bit guilty when you give yourself nice things, especially if you don’t need them.

But it’s ok to do things for no other reason than they make you feel good. Taking care of your emotional and mental health is essential to a happy life. So if your health is improved by buying something non-essential, then you didn’t waste your money. It was worth it to make you happy.

At North Coast Medispa, we want to help you look beautiful, and feel beautiful too. Our cosmetics are about giving you confidence and improving your emotional and mental wellbeing, not just improving appearance.

Please take care of yourself. Do something nice for yourself today. It will help you feel beautiful.
