ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS

Anti-wrinkle injections are used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles by relaxing the facial muscles that repeatedly contract in the same location (such as your frown line).

The most common treatment areas include the Crow’s Feet, Forehead Lines and Smile Lines. Anti Wrinkle Injections can also treat excessive sweating, jaw clenching/grinding, chin dimples and neck bands.

North Coast Medispa stocks Teoxane, Allergan and Galderma cosmetic injectable products.

ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTION FAQ

A medicated product made from a natural purified protein (“Botulinum Toxin”) is injected in to the selected muscles, interfering with neural transmission between the brain and the muscle. This means that when your brain is telling your face to frown or squint, the muscle can’t receive the message and won’t contract (preventing the formation of wrinkles).

The product affects only the specifically targeted muscles.

The required dose for the treatment is tailored according to the individual patient, the desired outcome and the mass of muscle being injected. The dosages required may change over time if the treatment is performed regularly.

Anti wrinkle injections are a very well tolerated treatment. The needles used for cosmetic injections have a super fine diameter, so they’re not very intrusive and far less painful than most other types of injections. Small ice packs are often used on the treatment area to disrupt pain and in some cases a numbing agent can be applied.

Before receiving any cosmetic injections, you must be assessed to determine if you’re medically suitable for treatment. It is important that you disclose any medication that you are taking, any health conditions affecting your muscles or nerves or if you are known to have any allergies.

To be suitable candidate for anti wrinkle injections, you will be at least 18 years old, in good overall health and have realistic expectations of the treatment.

You may not be suitable for treatment if you have any disease that affects your nerves or muscles, have a skin infection in the treatment area, are currently pregnant, nursing or planning to become pregnant.

Due to the lack of medical research done on the topic, it is best to err of the side of caution and not have anti wrinkle injections during pregnancy. The same is recommended while breastfeeding, as it is unclear if the product can make its way into the breast milk.

Initial effects are usually seen within 1-2 days but the full result of the treatment will generally not be seen until 10-14 days post-procedure. Results typically last 3 months.

Anti-wrinkle injections are not an exact science and results may vary between patients and treatments.

Immediately post-treatment, you can resume your normal daily activities however, as a general precaution, you should refrain from doing anything strenuous for one or two days. You should also avoid laser / IPL treatments, facials and facial massage for one to two weeks after the injections. This is to minimise the chance of the product moving to the surrounding muscles.

It is important to follow any post-treatment care instructions given to you by your injector.

Dermal fillers are a non-surgical injectable treatment used to instantly add volume to correct and enhance facial contours and features. They are most often used to enhance the shape and volume of lips and smooth out and reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and folds.

DERMAL FILLERS FAQ

Temporary soft tissue fillers (“dermal fillers”) are made from hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the skin with powerful hydration and anti-ageing properties.

When injected skilfully just below the surface of the skin, dermal fillers instantly add volume to the targeted area and can be used to enhance, restore and shape facial features. The procedure is relatively quick with only minimal discomfort.

Dermal filler products are available in various viscosities to suit the indication being treated i.e. areas that require a more structural enhancement require a thicker, less malleable product while thinner fillers are used where softer features are required.

Dermal fillers are often used in conjunction with anti-wrinkle injections to achieve a harmonious rejuvenation of the face.

Dermal fillers are a well tolerated treatment. The needles used for cosmetic injections have a super fine diameter, so they’re not very intrusive and far less painful than most other types of injections.

Small ice packs are often used on the treatment area to disrupt pain and in some cases a numbing agent can be applied.

The results of the dermal fillers are instantly noticeable, with the full effect occurring within 48 hours.

Results typically last between 6 and 12 months before the effects of the dermal filler gradually weaken. The appearance of your skin will revert to its natural state unless further treatments are administered.

There may be swelling and bruising at the injection site although there is generally no downtime post-treatment with most patients able to return to normal activities immediately. Mild pain, tenderness and swelling as well as bruising at the injection site may be present for up to 14 days.

It is important to follow any post-treatment care instructions given to you by your injector.

If you have any concerns or questions before or after your injectables treatment, please contact the clinic.

fast dissolving injections faq

Fat Dissolving injections use a synthetic form of Deoxycholic acid, a bile acid naturally produced by your body, to help absorb fat. Once injected, the acid destroys fat cells beneath the chin area so it can’t store fat anymore.

Before the procedure, the area to be treated is first sterilised and then marked out with a small grid so that the dose required can be accurately calculated and precisely injected. A topical numbing agent or ice pack will then be applied to ease any pain or discomfort. A series of 20 to 50 injections are used under the chin. The acid then works gradually to destroy fat cells, which are metabolised by the body over the following weeks.

The number of treatment sessions necessary varies between individuals. Multiple treatments might be needed to reach optimal results. You can receive up to six Fat Dissolving Injection treatments, with at least one month between each session.

You will need an initial two treatments performed 4 – 6 weeks apart, with each session requiring two vials of product. This is the minimum needed to see results however in some cases (depending on your goals and the amount of fat to be dissolved) you may require up to 6 treatments.

The majority of patients achieve their desired result after 4 treatments. We will work with you to determine if you are an appropriate candidate for the treatment and how many treatments are likely to be required.

Please note that with any cosmetic procedure, it is important to have realistic expectations. This is a non-surgical option which may not have the same overall result as liposuction and no guarantee can be made on the result.

Before receiving any cosmetic injections, you must be assessed to determine if you’re medically suitable for treatment. It is important that you disclose any medication that you are taking, any health concerns or if you are known to have any allergies.

To be suitable candidate for fat dissolving injections, you will be at least 18 years old, in good overall health and have realistic expectations of the treatment.

Treatment with deoxycholic acid cannot be performed if you have an active infection in the treatment area.

It is important to inform our team if you have had surgery to the face/jaw/chin, previous cosmetic injectables, bleeding problems or are taking blood thinning medications (eg aspirin, warfarin). This treatment cannot be performed in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

The product used in our fat dissolving injections has been approved in Australia for improving the appearance of submental fat/fullness under the chin. It is not known yet whether it is safe to use this product in other areas of the body.

The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of hardness around the treatment area. Swelling may persist for up to 4-6 weeks after the treatment while the acid is working to dissolve the fat.

Other risks include trouble swallowing and nerve injury in the jaw that can temporarily cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness.

It is important to contact the clinic as soon as possible if you experience any adverse reaction after having a double chin treatment.

pdo threading

Matrix Mono Threads are a type of single PDO filament. Matrix Mono Threads are inserted into the skin to achieve maximum collagen re-production. After entering the skin, the threads activate collagen synthesis for a gradual skin rejuvenation effect.

Matrix PDO Threads induce production of collagen, creating a tightening effect for 6 to 12 months after your procedure. The threads become a support structure for your face, allowing natural collagen production to take place treating neck sagginess, forehead lines, and facial wrinkles. The threads can also add volume to the cheeks. Over time the PDO will be fully absorbed by the body.

A consultation with one of our Registered Nurse is required prior to beginning to determine your requirements and suitability for PDO Threads.

PLATELET RICH PLASMA FAQ

The procedure begins by extracting a sample of the patient’s blood (using the same process as in a typical blood test) which is then spun in a centrifuge to create a concentrate of Platelet Rich Plasma.

The concentrated plasma solution is then injected under the skin at the targeted areas to stimulate the body in to improving the overall quality and health of the skin. We may also combine the injections with skin needling, depending on the condition of your skin and your goals.

The platelet-rich solution works to kickstart the body’s cellular processes, stimulating collagen production, skin cell turnover and invigorating the area with stem cells and growth factors.

The procedure takes about an hour and is well tolerated with typically no discomfort.

You may not be suitable for treatment if you have a skin infection in the treatment area, are currently pregnant, nursing or planning to become pregnant.

Results will subtly occur over a period of 8 weeks, depending on your overall health.

It is recommended to have an initial 2 – 4 initial treatments at 6 weekly intervals, followed with a single annual “maintenance” treatment for optimal results.

Downtime is minimal and side effects are usually limited to minor swelling, bruising and tenderness for up to 24 hours.

It is important to follow any after-care instructions given to you by your practitioner and contact the clinic as soon as possible if you are concerned about any side effects.

SCULPTRA FAQ

SCULPTRA ADDRESSES AN UNDERLYING CAUSE OF FACIAL AGEING, NOT JUST THE SYMPTOMS
Not All Anti-Aging Treatments Are the Same:

Collagen creams: Collagen creams do not fully penetrate to the dermis, so most topical treatments are effective as moisturisers that briefly improve the skin’s appearance.

Collagen Supplements: When ingested, the digestive system breaks down collagen proteins and their effectiveness remains inconclusive.

Anti Wrinkle Injections: Anti wrinkle temporarily weaken muscles to minimise fine lines and wrinkles. Results typically last a couple months.

As a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) collagen stimulator, Sculptra helps restore the deep, underlying structure of the skin to diminish facial wrinkles. Sculptra works with your body within the deep dermis to help revitalise collagen production and help restore your skin’s inner structure and volume.

As the Sculptra PLLA microparticles are absorbed, they help stimulate collagen production. Rebuilt collagen strands begin gradually helping to restore facial volume and the look of fullness to wrinkles and folds.

Sculptra may stimulate collagen growth which helps to restore facial volume and the look of fullness to wrinkles and folds over time.

SLOW AND STEADY STRENGTH
Sculptra is made with biocompatible, biodegradable, synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid, which is gradually and naturally absorbed by the body and helps to rebuild lost collagen through a series of treatments administered by a trained specialist.

The specialist injects treatment into the appropriate dermal plane where strands of collagen support your skin’s structure. Over time, Sculptra helps the body reproduce lost collagen.

The number of injection appointments and the number of injections per appointment vary from person to person, depending on how much collagen has been lost. On average, three injection appointments are needed over a period of a few months.

Sculptra should be iniected into the appropriate plane. Superficial injections may be associated with small bumps and larger lumps under the skin in the treated area. In a clinical study, a few subjects reported these bumps and lumps, but none of these events were reported as serious adverse events by the investigator.

In this clinical trial, the most commonly reported side effects after treatment were:
– Redness
– Swelling
– Tenderness
– Injection site pain
– Bruising
– Bleeding
– Itching and lumps

Sculptra is FDA approved in the U.S. and has been used worldwide since 1999.

Sculptra contains a synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid, which is a biocompatible, biodegradable substance that is gradually and naturally absorbed by the body and commonly found in dissolvable stitches.

Though allergy testing is not required prior to treatment, you should not use Sculptra if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. You should also not use the product when you have an active skin infection or inflammation in the treatment area, or if you have a history or susceptibility to keloid formation or hypertrophic scarring.

SKIN BOOSTERS FAQ

Each treatment involves a series of hydrating micro-injections of Hyaluronic Acid (HA), a water-attracting substance found naturally in the body that maintains hydration in the skin.

The stabilised Hyaluronic Acid is a soft, gel-like substance that absorbs water (up to 1000 times it’s weight). This results in long-lasting, deep skin hydration to the treated areas, giving it improved firmness, elasticity and smoothness.

The improvement in skin quality is subtle and gradual. Over time, the there will be a noticeable return of elasticity of the skin and reduction in skin surface roughness. The skin will feel smoother, softer and have a wonderful, radiant appearance.

Skin boosters are a well tolerated treatment. The needles used for cosmetic injections have a super fine diameter, so they’re not very intrusive and far less painful than most other types of injections.

Small ice packs are often used on the treatment area to disrupt pain and in some cases a numbing agent can be applied.

Skin Booster injections are most suitable for mature or sun-damaged skin. They are ideal for those who want improved skin texture without the structural effects of dermal fillers.

Before receiving any injections, you must be assessed to determine if you’re medically suitable for treatment. It is important that you disclose any medication that you are taking, any health conditions or if you are known to have any allergies.

The results of the skin booster injections are instantly noticeable, with the full effect occurring within 48 hours.

Results typically last between 6 – 9 months before the effects of the skin booster gradually weaken. Regular ongoing treatments will ensure your skin remains youthful-looking and healthy.

A typical treatment program with Skin Boosters is made up of three initial treatment sessions at 2 to 4 week intervals.

Immediately post-treatment, you can resume your normal daily activities however you will likely have some swelling and redness.

It is important to follow any post-treatment care instructions given to you by your injector.

SWEAT FREE INJECTIONS FAQ

Excessive sweating (or hyperhidrosis) is quite common – affecting up to 3% of the population – and can occur in the underarms, hands, feet and sometimes other areas.

North Coast Medispa offers an effective treatment of excessive sweating with injections of Botulinum Toxin (the same prescribed medication as used in anti-wrinkle injections).

The injections block the output of the sweat glands, and can improve the problem significantly.

Treatment is simple, with several small injections of the Botulinum Toxin being placed superficially into the skin at the sites where the sweating comes from. Most people tolerate the injections well however we can apply local anaesthetic cream prior to the injections to minimise the discomfort.

Sweat free injections are a very well tolerated treatment. The needles used for the treatment have a super fine diameter, so they’re not very intrusive and far less painful than most other types of injections. Small ice packs are often used on the treatment area to disrupt pain and in some cases a numbing agent can be applied.

Before receiving any injections, you must be assessed to determine if you’re medically suitable for treatment. It is important that you disclose any medication that you are taking, any health conditions affecting your muscles or nerves or if you are known to have any allergies.

To be suitable candidate for sweat free injections, you will be at least 18 years old, in good overall health and have realistic expectations of the treatment.

You may not be suitable for treatment if you have any disease that affects your nerves or muscles, have a skin infection in the treatment area, are currently pregnant, nursing or planning to become pregnant.

Due to the lack of medical research done on the topic, it is best to err of the side of caution and not have sweat free injections during pregnancy. The same is recommended while breastfeeding, as it is unclear if the product can make its way into the breast milk.

Initial effects are usually seen within 1-2 days but the full result of the treatment will generally not be seen until 10-14 days post-procedure. The effects generally last between 3 to 9 months, although there can be a lot of variation between individuals and treatments.

The procedure is able to be repeated 2 or 3 times a year if needed.

Laser Skin Rejuvenation FAQ

The Clear & Brilliant is a fractional laser designed to provide excellent results over a series of treatments. With very minimal post-treatment inflammation, it is the perfect introduction to laser skin rejuvenation.

The laser targets the dermal (sub) layer of the skin while leaving the epidermis (top) layer intact. This minimises visible redness and promotes faster healing and minimal recovery time. The affected areas of the skin will begin regenerating new skin cells, producing fresher, smoother and healthier skin.

There are two separate hand-pieces available, which specifically target different skin layers of the skin. The practitioner performing your laser skin rejuvenation treatment will select the Clear + Brilliant hand piece that is most suitable for targeting your skin concerns.

The Clear + Brilliant laser is considered a ‘lunch time’ treatment, generally requiring just 30 minutes for a complete session.

Clear + Brilliant is an ideal introductory laser treatment for those who want to prevent and treat the earliest signs of ageing, such as fine lines and sun damaged skin.

As the laser targets water in the skin (as opposed to pigmentation) this is a safe treatment that is suitable for all skin types, including darker skin types that are at risk of complications with other treatment modalities.

This is a very well-tolerated treatment however an application of topical numbing cream will be applied to your face in order to provide additional comfort.

A noticeable difference in your skin tone and texture will be seen around three days post treatment.

The Clear + Brilliant is designed for best results over a series of treatments. An average of 3 – 6 treatments are recommended to achieve longer-lasting results.

There will be noticeable redness and mild swelling for around 24 hours after the treatment however you can apply a high quality camouflage makeup and continue normal daily activities immediately, taking note of any post-treatment instructions provided by the practitioner.

Around three days post-treatment, you’ll notice the skin has a rough texture. This is the old skin being removed and is a normal part of the process. It is important to not pick or peel at the skin, as this can lead to infection.

Laser rejuvenation is safe when used by a properly trained skin care and laser professional, however there are always risks associated with laser treatments.

Potential side effects include prolonged redness, swelling, blistering, scarring, infection, pigmentary changes (hyperpigmentation), herpes (cold sore) reactivation and acne flare-up.

It is important to follow any post-care instructions given to you by your practitioner. If you experience any adverse reactions, please let us know as soon as possible so we can assist.

IPL HAIR REMOVAL FAQ

The Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) emits powerful wavelengths of light in to the skin, targeting the melanin (pigmentation) of the hair follicle. Heat energy is absorbed by the hair, destroying the growth cells and disrupting the hair follicle’s re-growth potential without affecting the surrounding tissue.

IPL Hair Removal is a well proven light-based hair removal technique, it is not quite the same technology used for laser hair removal but the end result will be the same. We use the M22 machine, designed by the original creators of IPL technology, Lumenis. This is medical-grade technology, only available to medical practitioners.

There may be mild discomfort during the treatment but for most people, it is a well tolerated treatment. The sensation is similar to the snap of a small elastic band against the skin.

IPL hair removal is most suitable for people with fair skin and dark hair, as the light is attracted to the melanin (colour) in the hair. Darker skin has a higher melanin level, which means treatments need to be carefully performed at much lower settings, and so more treatments are required. You must avoid tanning your skin (even with self-tanners) for up to 4 weeks prior to starting a treatment program (and during), as this can reduce the effectiveness of the IPL treatment.

It is currently not possible for IPL or lasers to remove blonde, red, white or grey hair.

Test patches are always offered and our laser/IPL operators will tell you if treatment would be ineffective or unsafe.

To have a significant reduction of hair (i.e. 80% hair reduction compared to the hairs present at the start of treatment), you’ll need an average of six to 12 treatments. There are many variables that affect how many IPL treatments you’ll need, including the area you’re treating, hormonal growth, lifestyle, general health and medication. This will be discussed with you during your initial consultation however no guarantees can be made as to how many treatments you may require.

Once your initial course of treatments has been completed, it’s advised to have a single six or 12 monthly maintenance treatment. There are currently no laser or IPL solutions available on the market to completely and permanently remove hair.

Significant hair reduction will be visible after the first session. Due to the life cycle of hair growth, it is impossible to remove all of the hair from an area in a session – we can also only treat active hairs (in the ‘anagen’ growth phase). New follicles may activate or follicles not in the ‘anagen’ phase will still grow, which is why a series of treatments is required over a period of time.

Once you’ve completed your initial IPL hair removal program, you can look forward to a lifetime of smooth skin with only the occasional maintenance treatment!

LASER AND IPL FAQ

The Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and laser devices emit powerful wavelengths of light that target red pigmentation in the vascular lesions. Heat energy then destroys the pigment without affecting the skin or tissue surrounding the targeted area.

IPL and lasers work at different wavelengths of light, so we typically combine both technologies to more effectively target the vascular concern.

The M22 Laser works by delivering pulses of light energy to the treatment area; as these pulses hit the complexion, they target parts of the skin that are a different pigment shade than surrounding healthy tissue. That means any type of pigmentation – be it from sun damage or scarring – will absorb the light waves

Number of treatments will vary depending on the specific concern being treated, but a minimum of two is usually required. Other factors including your general health will affect how many treatments are required.

Generally, a course of 2 – 6 treatments 4 weeks apart is required to achieve an optimal result.

It is important to have realistic expectations of possible results with vein treatments. Due to the nature of vascular lesions and pigmentation, it is usually not possible completely clear the concern with the use of laser or IPL. A significant improvement is often seen but no guarantee of outcome can be made.

LASER TATTOO REMOVAL

People get tattoos for many different reasons — from an impulsive drunken dare to an act of self-expression or something very personal like the memory of a loved one.

But for some people, those everlasting memories can transform into regrets. It could be that they no longer like the design, their employment prospects have been hindered or maybe they just want to make room for something (or somebody) new.

Fortunately, tattoos aren’t quite as permanent as they once were and so an increasing number of people are seeking out reputable tattoo removal clinics for a fresh start.

LASER TATTOO REMOVAL FAQ

The laser works by emitting specific wavelengths of intense light into the skin that target the pigment (colour) of the tattoo being treated. The surrounding non-inked skin is left unaffected.

When the laser energy is absorbed into the tattoo, the ink particles are shattered. This causes them to break up into tiny fragments that are then absorbed and naturally expelled by the body over time. It’s not actually the laser removing the tattoo but rather the body’s natural immune system. We see the result of this process as the tattoo gradually lightens in appearance. With a series of treatments, the ink will continue to fade away until no longer visible.

For those thinking about having laser tattoo removal, it’s important to have realistic expectations before committing to the process. Tattoo removal is far more time consuming, costly and painful than getting a tattoo in the first place.

The result of the treatment can be influenced by a number of factors including the colour, depth and type of the ink, position of the tattoo on body, the age of tattoo, skin colour and general health. This makes it extremely difficult to predict how many treatments may be required.

Fading a tattoo (for a cover up) usually takes between 2 – 5 sessions while complete removal may need as many as 15 sessions, with 6 – 8 weeks between each session.

Black and dark blue tattoos respond best to laser treatments, particularly on people with fair skin. Other colours are more difficult to address and require different types of lasers to be used.

As with any advanced skin treatment, there are some risks to be aware of. After the procedure, there will be some heat, pain and swelling as well as possible blistering or crusting. Once the tattoo has been removed, there may still be some skin discolouration where the ink once was. Although rare, scarring is also possible, particularly when aftercare instructions aren’t strictly followed or when inferior laser equipment is used.

In NSW, there is no regulation regarding the operation of a laser device and cheap, low quality machines are accessible to anybody. To avoid being burned by unsafe laser treatments, make sure you choose a medical clinic with qualified and experienced staff.
The laser operators at North Coast Medispa have completed laser safety courses in addition to training alongside our on-site Dermatologist, who is always available for consultation or to assist in the unlikely event of an adverse reaction.

LED PHOTOTHERAPY FAQ

This is a non-invasive treatment involving specific wave lengths of light to stimulate and activate cellular processes in the skin. Each wavelength emitted by the lights has a different depth of penetration and is designed to induce a particular response in the skin.

The blue light addresses active acne by destroying the acne bacteria colonisation in the sebaceous (oil) glands and reducing the inflammation of the skin. The red light aids skin healing and rejuvenation by inducing a very mild inflammation in the targeted area to produce an immune system response that helps increase skin cell turnover and regeneration. Both lights are typically used together to treat active acne and other combinations are available depending on the skin condition.

Not at all. LED Phototherapy is a very gentle treatment that, unlike IPL and laser treatments, does not produce heat in the skin – making this a very comfortable, relaxing skin rejuvenation treatment.

Everybody can benefit from LED Phototherapy – it is safe and suitable for ALL skin types. We highly recommend LED phototherapy to everybody, either immediately after another treatment or as a general skin maintenance treatment.

There are no risks of adverse effects unless you suffer from a light-sensitive condition. Unlike IPL and laser treatments, LED Phototherapy does not produce heat in the skin – making this a very comfortable, relaxing treatment with absolutely no downtime. This treatment perfectly compliments many other treatments by reducing inflammation and healing time.

Immediately post treatment, the skin will feel slightly plump and more radiant with a noticeable reduction in any redness or irritation. Long term results are usually quite noticeable but will depend on the skin concern being treated and the specific course of treatments prescribed.

Most clients report a sensation of feeling very relaxed and refreshed after an LED Phototherapy treatment.Due to the gentle nature of the treatment, there are generally no post-treatment care requirements. General skin care measures should be taken, particularly minimising exposure to UV rays from the sun and using high quality home care products.Specific instructions will be given to you by the treating practitioner if necessary.

PDT FAQ's

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a minimally-invasive treatment for certain types of superficial skin cancers and premalignant lesions.

By combining topical drugs called photosensitising agents and specific wavelengths of light, PDT destroys abnormal cells without the incisions, downtime and scarring associated with surgical treatment of skin cancers. PDT is also used in cosmetic settings for the rejuvenation of sun-damaged skin.

PDT treatments are well tolerated, quick to perform and have a high cure rate in superficial non-melanoma skin cancers.

There are several stages of treatment with PDT. First, the photosensitising agent (aminolevulinic acid or methyl aminolevulinate) is applied to the treatment area in the form of a cream. The drug is absorbed by the abnormal cells over a prescribed amount of time.

A specific light source (visible light, LED and/or laser) is then applied to the treatment area to activate the cream, causing the photosensitive drug to selectively destroy the damaged or cancerous cells with minimal damage to the surrounding tissues.

We will prepare your skin with cleansing, applying a chemical sunscreen to block out the unwanted UVA and UVB lights, gently remove the crusting over the skin surface and apply the medicated cream (photosensitising cream). For those undergoing treatment for low grade skin cancers, the treatment area will be covered with a dressing.

Once the skin is prepared and the creams are applied, you can leave the clinic.

For those who are undergoing daylight PDT, you are required to stay outdoors for 2-4 hours in order for the visible light to activate the cream.

For those who are undergoing red light PDT or laser PDT, You are required to come back to the clinic after 3 hours. We’ll then active the cream with the red LED light, laser or a combination of both.

The number of PDT treatments required to yield a desirable outcome depends on the skin concern being treated. To improve the cosmetic appearance of sun-damaged skin, only one session is needed.

To treat low-grade skin cancers, plan to undergo two sessions scheduled one to two weeks apart. A second treatment ensures the highest chance of cure when using PDT to treat superficial non-melanoma skin cancers.

PDT is well-tolerated by most people. Day light PDT is usually tolerated by most without much pain. PDT with red LED light or laser can be more painful. To increase patient comfort, a cool spray is used during the treatment and pain relief medication can be taken one hour before illumination. An anaesthetic cream can be applied to further alleviate discomfort if needed.

Occasionally, we administer local anaesthetic to maximise pain relief. We recommend taking over-the-counter pain medication after the procedure if the treatment covers a large or especially sensitive area

It is common to feel a burning sensation soon after a PDT session. This discomfort usually subsides over the next few days.

Other common side effects are similar to a sunburn, including swelling, bruising and peeling skin. These effects rarely last for longer than a week. Some patients develop pustular whitehead rashes, but this is a more unusual side effect of PDT.

The treated skin will be light-sensitive at first and should be carefully protected from the sun.

Optimal results are seen several weeks after a session when the treated lesions have been eliminated and the skin is rejuvenated. Results continue to improve for months after a PDT treatment.

SKIN ASSESSMENT PROCESS

Your skin assessment will be performed by one of our Skin Therapists who are trained in the science of skin care. We understand that for many clients — particularly those with long-term skin conditions — this can be a vulnerable time, so we aim to provide a professional but relaxed consultation.

1. DISCUSSION AND HISTORY

Your practitioner will begin by asking you about your specific skin concerns as well as your goals and expectations from any treatments. They will then ask a series of questions about your relevant medical history, current medications, your lifestyle, any past skin conditions or skin treatments and your current skin care routine. It is beneficial to bring any skin care products you’re using to your consultation.

You’ll be given information on the cause of your concerns and what treatment options may be available. You’re encouraged to use this opportunity to ask any questions you have about skin care or specific treatment modalities.

2. Non-invasive Examination

The examination process will vary depending on the specific concerns you’re presenting with. In most cases, your face will be gently cleansed to remove makeup and debris, allowing for a more thorough examination of the health and condition of the skin. Photos may be taken to document your treatment progress.

In regard to Cosmetic Injectable Consultations, our nurses are trained to identify any severe or serious skin conditions that require specialist intervention and will refer you to your GP or our Dermatologist where appropriate.

3. PLAN

Your practitioner will discuss a personally tailored skin care plan that includes a timeline and cost estimate of recommended in-clinic treatments and home skin care products. You will be given specific information about treatments relevant to addressing your concerns, as well as any suitable alternatives. In some cases, we may refer you to another provider (e.g. Plastic Surgeon) if we feel that would be the best option for you.

There is no obligation to proceed with any treatments or purchase products at this stage and you’re welcome to take home the information received to consider your options before booking your treatments.

Medical Skin Peels FAQ

Skin peels or Chemical Peels, are a chemical exfoliation procedure used to address skin imperfections by removing damaged skin, stimulating skin cell turnover and increasing collagen production.

This is quick and effective procedure with minimal discomfort. Down time depends on the type and strength of the peel.

Superficial skin peels are well tolerated and do not require pain medication or anaesthetic. Medium-depth peels may require painkillers or anaesthetic prior to treatment.

The procedure begins with the skin being cleansed and prepped to remove impurities and oil from the surface of the skin. The chemical peel solution is then applied to the targeted area(s) and left to work on the skin for 3 – 10 minutes (depending on the skin condition, peel type, discomfort experienced). The peel may be done in either a single or multiple layers.

A mild stinging sensation will be experienced immediately after the application of the peel. This is normal and can be managed by using a fan to blow cool air on the treatment area. Your therapist will encourage you to communicate with them if you become excessively uncomfortable and the peel can be neutralised immediately if there are any concerning reactions.

After the solution has been left for the determined period of time, the therapist will neutralise and remove the peel. The procedure is completed by applying a soothing moisturising cream and sunscreen to the treated area.

You will notice more even colour, tone and texture of your skin after the healing process (3 – 10 days). As skin cell turnover occurs regularly, the results of a chemical peel are temporary and a series of treatments is recommended for longer lasting and continuous results.

Immediately post-treatment, the face will appear red and feel slightly warm, similar to a mild sunburn. You can apply a tinted moisturiser or high quality camouflage makeup to cover the redness usually several hours after the treatment (or as directed by your therapist).

Over the next few days post-treatment, your skin will feel tight and may darken. The skin will then gradually peel to reveal fresher, newer skin with a more even colour, tone and texture.

The peeling skin should not be picked at, as this can increase the risk of scarring and delay the healing process. The redness and peeling effects generally last 3 – 5 days post-treatment with a superficial peel and up to 14 days with a medium depth peel. It is important to follow any post-treatment care instructions given to you by your therapist.

If you have any concerns before or after your treatment, please contact the clinic to discuss with your therapist.

When administered by an experienced and qualified therapist in an appropriate clinical setting, the chances of serious complications occurring with chemical peels are very minimal. However, as with all advanced skin treatments, there are risks and potential side effects to be aware of including: Post-Inflammatory hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, milia and comedone breakouts, scarring, infection, persistent erythema and toxicity.

China Doll Facial faq's

We’ll apply a layer of liquid carbon to your face (or body), allowing it to penetrate deeply into your pores and let it dry. The carbon bonds with any debris that might be present, like dead skin cells, contaminants and oil.

We’ll then pass a laser across the surface of your skin. Because the laser light is super attracted to carbon particles, its energy and heat is absorbed by the carbon paste destroying the particles in your pores.

Light from the laser is attracted to the carbon. The carbon absorbs the light energy. The reaction causes a mini explosion. The explosion pushes the energy, in the form of heat, deep into the layers of the skin where elastin and collagen are activated and cells begin producing anew. Meanwhile, on the surface of the skin, as the explosion occurs the carbon is vaporized along with any dirt, oil or dead skin cells. Sounds kind of scary, with all the explosions and vaporizing, but don’t worry. There’s very little discomfort or pain. The sensation has been described as a mild tingling or very slight pinch.

For those who want to combat the signs of ageing, Carbon Laser Facials can rejuvenate your skin by:

  • Reducing the signs of premature ageing
  • Improving skin integrity and radiance
  • Reducing fine lines and wrinkles
  • Increasing skin tone and texture
  • Reducing oily skin
  • Fading pigmentation

Your skin will feel immediately smoother and look instantly refreshed. Better still, there’s zero downtime! You can return to your daily activities immediately following your treatment – your skin may appear slightly red but this should disappear within a few hours. We recommend you use SPF 30+ and avoid abrasive exfoliates or other invasive skin treatments for a few days.

The treatment is gentle and non-invasive. You’ll probably hear a small pulse as we target the carbon particles in your pores with the laser. Our clients describe the feeling as warm or prickly but not painful.

EPIDERMAL BLADING

Epidermal blading, or “epiblading”, is an innovative exfoliation technique that employs a special surgical instrument to gently remove the topmost layer of skin and vellus (fine) hair of the face. This results in a very deep and even exfoliation, without the use of chemical peeling agents.

This means that the fresher, younger skin will be revealed and allows for better penetration of active skin care ingredients (such as vitamin C) deeper in to the skin.

EPIBLADING FAQ

Epiblading is a relatively straight-forward treatment involving the use of a sterile, single use surgical instrument being gently used across the face to “shave” the upper-most layer of dead cell skins. This allows fresher, younger skin cells to be revealed (which gives that youthful glow) and removes any of the vellus (fine) hairs on the face.

After treatment, the smooth texture of your skin allows for very even makeup application, so it’s the perfect treatment pre-event.

An additional benefit of epiblading (or any skin exfoliation treatment) is that it allows for better penetration of skin care ingredients into the deeper layers of the skin, enhancing their effects.

Absolutely not, your hair will grow back to it’s original ‘pre-blading’ condition after 4-6 weeks.

Epidermal Blading is safe for all skin types and is perfect for those wanting a general refresh of the skin or a no-downtime treatment right before an event.

Those with fine vellus (light) hairs that can’t be treated with laser will love the treatment – the hairs do not grow back more coarse or darker than they were before the treatment!

Results are instant. You’ll notice a refreshing glow in your skin right after your epiblading treatment. The fine hairs on your face are immediately removed in the treatment, along with the upper-most layer of old, dead skin cells.

As with all skin rejuvenation treatments, the results are only sustained by a series of treatments.

To really boost that glow and treat your skin, we also highly recommend an LED phototherapy session as an add-on to epiblading.

Epiblading is generally a very safe treatment, with the main risks being bleeding or scratches. The blades used for this procedure are single-use and our clinic adheres to strict medical sterilisation protocols. With proper post-treatment care, the risk of infection or other complications is very minimal.

Anti-wrinkle injections are not an exact science and results may vary between patients and treatments.

MICRODERMABRASION

Microdermabrasion is a mild mechanical exfoliation technique used to remove the superficial layer of old skin cells. This improves the appearance of the skin and creates better permeability of the skin – allowing topical products to penetrate deeper in to the skin.

MICRODERMABRASION FAQ

Microdermabrasion is a mild abrasive treatment that uses mechanical exfoliation to remove the superficial layer of dead skin cells, improving the appearance and permeability of the skin.

A microdermabrasion treatments involves a process of tiny, sterilised crystals being passed over the epidermis (upper layers of the skin) for the purpose of exfoliating dormant and dead cells. A vacuum suction nozzle works to extract the excess abraded skin cells, debris and excess crystals while also promoting lymphatic drainage.

This is a quick procedure with no down time, so it is well suited to being done in a lunchtime break and makes a perfect treatment to maintain the skin in between more intensive treatments.

At North Coast Medispa we use both diamond and crystal Microdermabrasion systems.

Our Deluxe Microdermabrasion takes the process several steps further by combining a double Cleanse, Microdermabrasion, Skin Rejuvenation Mask, Vitamin Infusion, Moisturiser and Sunscreen – it’s the ultimate luxury pick-me-up for your skin.

Suitable candidates for this treatment include those with sun damaged, dull or acne-prone skin, fine superficial scarring, rhytides, enlarged pores, comedones (white/black heads) and/or milia.

As this procedure only affects the epidermis (the superficial layer of skin comprised of dead skin cells), this is a very safe procedure for all skin types.

Microdermabrasion results are immediate. The skin will be noticeably smoother with a refreshing glow and radiance after just one Microdermabrasion treatment.

As skin cell turnover is a constant process, results are temporary and it is recommended to do a series of treatments at regular intervals to maintain and improve results.

Microdermabrasion treatments require no downtime. You can return to your normal routine and apply cosmetics directly after treatment.

You may experience a slight tightness and/or minor redness at the treatment location (similar to a windburn) immediately post treatment. There may also be some mild flaking or peeling over the next couple of days.

It is important to protect your skin from the sun, keep the skin hydrated with a quality moisturiser and follow the post-treatment care instructions provided to you in order to maintain your results.

RF ablative resurfacing faq's

Venus Viva™ skin resurfacing treatments work with tiny pins that safely deliver heat (via NanoFractional Radio Frequency) through the skin’s surface.

This creates tiny micro-dermal wounds, which the body naturally heals on its own. This process repairs signs of skin damage visible on the surface of the skin. Since the wounds are so small, the treatment is much more comfortable than traditional CO2 lasers, while still producing incredibly visible results.

Avoid applying lotions, creams, perfumes, powders, or makeup to the treatment area prior to each treatment. Shaving may be necessary if a patient has excessive hair in the treatment area. If possible, patients should have their complete medical history available in case it is required by the treatment provider.

Avoid applying lotions, makeup, water, or anything else to the treatment area for 24 hours post-treatment. Hot baths or showers, massages, rigorous exercise, and any activity requiring direct skin contact or causing excessive perspiration in the treatment area should be avoided for two days post-procedure.

Avoid tanning before and after each treatment session, and wear sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30 between treatments.

To ensure that you are comfortable during the procedure, a topical anaesthetic will be applied which takes around twenty minutes to take affect. We will then use a special applicator hand piece to deliver the radio frequency (RF) bursts to the treatment area, which takes about fifteen to twenty minutes, depending on the total area treated. You’ll feel a slight warmth and pinprick sensations, but the pain should be minimal with the topical anaesthesia. Most patients handle the treatment very well, and any discomfort is short in duration.

Immediately following the procedure it is normal to experience a feeling of sunburn on the skin, redness, heat and some swelling may occur for 1-3 days. Skin dryness and flaking or “sandpaper“ feel may occur for the following few days depending on the type of treatment performed.

Most patients see the best results after three or four treatments, each spaced four weeks apart. However, the exact number of treatments depends on the individual and the treatment area.

We will be able to outline the best treatment plan based on each patient’s individual needs.

How long results are maintained also varies from patient to patient and is dependent on severity of the skin and post-procedure skin care. Results will continue to improve following the final treatment, though one touch-up session is recommended approximately every six months, depending on the skin’s response and the area being treated.

The penetration of sterile micro-needles creates controlled damage to the skin, stimulating the body’s natural healing response which increases collagen and elastin production to restore the skin.

Prior to the skin needling treatment, a numbing cream will be applied at the treatment area to minimise any discomfort. The treatment itself involves a needling device being passed over the skin, with the sterilised single use needle tip vertically penetrating the skin at selected depths (between 0.5mm and 2.5mm).

There will be localised bleeding at the treatment site, however this is usually minimal and there is generally very little discomfort during the procedure.

Dermapen treatments may be enhanced by applying potent active ingredients (such as Vitamin C or Hyaluronic Acid) which will penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin or in combination with Platelet Rich Plasma.

Skin needling is an effective treatment that is particularly suited to treating acne scarring as well as addressing the early signs of ageing such as fine lines and wrinkles, skin tone and skin texture.

This is a suitable treatment for all skin types, including darker skin that is prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation with other treatment modalities.

This treatment is not recommended for those who are pregnant or nursing, have recently had cosmetic injections or who have active skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema or rosacea.

Visible results will generally occur 4 – 6 weeks post-treatment. One treatment is enough for a noticeable improvement however the best results will be achieved with a series of 3 – 6 treatments spaced 4 – 6 weeks apart.

Immediately after a skin needling session, post-treatment products will be applied to the treated area to protect the skin from infection and to aid with the healing process.
After the treatment, you will experience moderate erythema (redness and inflammation), similar to having a moderate sunburn.

You may also notice skin tightness, stinging, itching, flaking or hives as well as sensitivity in the treatment area. These symptoms will usually subside over 2 – 5 days as the skin heals.

It is important to follow any after care instructions provided by the therapist to ensure the best results and to minimise the risk of infection or other complications.
